Tapentadol to treat moderate to severe acute pain




Why this medication is prescribed?

Tapentadol brand name is (nucynta) are the tablets used to treat moderate to severe pain (pain that suddenly begins, has a precise reason & is expected to set out when the cause of pain is healed. Tapentadol drugs are used to treat severe neuropathic pain (pain occur by nerve damage) mostly in the people who have diabetes. Tapentadol is a drug which is only used to treat people who are actually expected to need it to relive pain that cannot be controlled by use of other pain medication. Tapentadol is aclass of medications called narcotic. It works fabulously by altering the way the brain & nervous system respond to pain.

How to use the medicine?

Tapentadol is a long acting tablet which is to be taken orally through mouth. You can exercise those pills with or without food. It should be taken after every 4 to hours as required. If you are taking the tapentadol tablets, at a very first time than your doctor can advise you to take the second dose exactly after 1 hour completed of first dose. Do not increase or decrease the amount of doses by your will. Normally these tablets should be taken after every 12 hours. But in many cases doctors do alteration in timing by seeing the age, sex and condition of an individual.  Follow the instruction mentioned on your prescription label   carefully. Take tapentadol exactly as prescribed.

While exercising the tablet engulf it fully at once with enough amount of water without breaking or mashing it. At initial stage the doctor suggest you to take the low dose of tapentadol and gradually increase your dose until your pain are controlled.  If you feel that your pain is not under controlled then contact with your doctor. Don’t do any fluctuation in dose without talking to doctor.

Do not stop taking the tapentadol suddenly without talking to your doctor.  If you suddenly stop taking tapentadol you may experience withdrawal symptoms like; restlessness, nervousness, teary eyes, chills, sweating, stomach cramps, difficulty in sleeping, shivering, disorderly shaking part of the body, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, sneezing, fasten heart rate, hallucinations.

What are the precautions to be taken?

Before taking tapentadol,

  • Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to tapentadol, or any other medications, or any of the component in tapentadol tablets or long existing tablets. Ask your pharmacist or check the Medication Guide for a list of the ingredients.
  • Inform your doctor if you are taking the following medications or have stopped taking them inside the past two weeks: monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), linezolid (Zyvox), methylene blue, phenelzine (Nardil), rasagiline (Azilect), selegiline (Emsam, Eldepryl, Zelapar), and tranylcypromine (Parnate).
  • Also inform your doctor if any of these medications has been already prescribed to you during your treatment with tapentdol. Then your doctor will not allow you to take tapentaol if you are already taking any of these medications.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or nursing women because it can affect you baby.
  • You should be aware that this medicine decreases the fertility in men & women. Then before taking ask your doctor about the risk of taking tapentadol.
  • Inform your doctor if you have or have ever had an obstruction in your stomach or intestines, any condition that causes difficulty urinating; or pancreas, gallbladder, kidney, thyroid, or liver disease.
  • You should know that tapentadol makes drowsy. So after having it do not drive car, operate any heavy machinery or take part in any unsafe activities.
  • You should know that tapentadol may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, and fainting when you get up too quickly from a lying position.
  • You should know that tapentadol may cause constipation.
